About Us
CP3 is an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to studying the relationship between personalization algorithms and society. Our research focuses on the feedback loop between social media users and platform algorithms. We incorporate a variety of methods and perspectives that take into account both user agency and technological processes.
How do social media algorithms shape your worldview?
CP3 was formed in 2015 as an interdisciplinary reading group based at the University of Iowa’s Obermann Center for Advanced Studies. Over time, CP3 has evolved into a productive research group committed to true interdisciplinarity, guided by the belief that our work is strengthened by incorporating insights, theories, and methodologies from a variety of different academic disciplines.

Social Media Radicalization: Definitions, Theories, Methods
Thursday, April 24, 2025
The ways people talk about “radicalization” have changed significantly in recent years. CP3 will host an ICA preconference June 11, 2025 in Denver, CO. The preconference aims to bring scholars together to 1) interrogate the conceptualization of radicalization in research about social media, 2) diversify perspectives on radicalization online, 3) highlight work on radicalization that focuses on more “mundane” and “everyday” forms of radicalization online, 4) consider radicalization online as attitudinal or perceptual rather than solely an outcome of a process.
